As a Central Coast of CA photographer, I had the pleasure to document J + A’s amazing bond, gorgeous femme galore, and a tale that talks about sisterhood. Nothing brings me more pleasure than capturing beautiful and unique souls who love life! No matter whether it is weddings, couples, or simply BFFs, love is all around and should be celebrated. And that is precisely what J + A did! The best part? I got to photograph their BFF femme photography photoshoot at one of the most iconic locations – The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Bold, eclectic, and absolutely epic! The Madonna Inn
Let me brief you for a second if you haven’t heard about this venue. The Madonna Inn in California is one of those places that will spoil you with its eclectic decor. It has so many quirky yet glamorous dining rooms that you will be spoiled by the options! And the grounds around it are perfect for any wedding, couple photography or best friend shoot like in this case. That is why I was thrilled when Jeana told me that she wanted to surprise Ashley with a femme photography session at this place!
Jeana booked me as their photographer, wanting to celebrate 20 years of femmeship with A. She chose the Madonna Inn as a place of great importance to her and wanted her BFF to see it as she hadn’t been there before. Thus, A flew in from the East Coast.
Their story goes back to when they were college roommates in New York City. They bonded over their similar working-class backgrounds, being Femme queers, Geminis, and the belief in making magic in the world. Not to mention, their mutual political organizing in and out of school was their forte, generally causing queer femme feminist trouble all over. At that period when they moved to the city, it was one week after the Sept 11th attack. That experience alone bonded J and A instantly. Since that moment, they became close friends, letting their femmeship thrive and unfold.
In J’s own words, A is the closest person to her besides her partner. She is the godmother to her child, and her twin flame. I was enchanted by them. Let me share more about their relationship. I was delighted to shoot some fully glam pics of them in their room and around the Inn.
As an inclusive photographer, I loved their idea for the femme photography session. They wanted to bring some Dolly Parton, Kacey Musgraves Country Queen vibe, along with some Rock n Roll and queer magic. It was a true portrayal of their characters and their friendship – glamour, fun, laughs, champagne in the bathroom – best friends forever and ever! J chose the Madonna Inn as she feels the place as her mothership that can recharge her energy, so she wanted A to feel how perfectly it complemented them. And that was evident through this whole best friend shoot!
The fact that they said I understood their vision, and made them feel so special and at ease; created an even more wonderful atmosphere for me to document their bond! I am so glad that they loved my creative approach and my personality.
